—  ABOUT THE PROJECT—

gOAL

The Interstate 90 Exit 63 Interchange Improvements Project will provide a full interchange at Exit 63 and approximately four miles of Interstate improvements from mile marker 62 to mile marker 66. The improvements will provide additional capacity, reduce daily congestion, will provide full movements to eastbound and westbound I-90 at Exit 63, and improve safety and traffic operations in the corridor.

The project includes a study phase that involves an Interchange Modification Study for federal approval of the changes at Exit 63 on Interstate 90 followed by an Environmental Study to provide federal environmental clearance to design and construct the interchange. The initial design and construction project will be the Exit 63 Interchange and associated Interstate widening from exit 61 through the West Gate Bridge, recognized as project (3022). Preparing preliminary and final construction plans for the project are the final steps before bidding the project for construction. The overall goals for the project are illustrated in the Project Timeline below.

GOALS

The project begins with an Interchange Modification Study to develop and review alternative interchange concepts including the I-90 improvements and then screening these alternatives to provide one recommended alternative.  The development of the Interchange Modification Justification Report (IMJR) for the replacement of the Exit 63 interchange will be prepared to document this process.

The IMJR is complete and provided on the documents page.

The next step is conducting an Environmental Study, meeting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements, to develop environmental documentation necessary for the construction projects to modify the interchange, regrade mainline I-90, and provide related crossroad improvements.

The Interstate 90 (I-90) Exit 61 to Exit 67 Corridor Study will investigate two primary areas of need:

  1. I-90 Corridor Capacity: Traffic analyses are being conducted to assess the need for additional travel lanes along I-90, regional roadway network improvements, or other multimodal mobility enhancements to provide acceptable traffic operations and safety now and into the long-range future.

  2. Interchange Access: The current interchange at Exit 63 provides only for movements to and from the west, not in compliance with current Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) policy requiring that service interchanges provide for all movements. The study will investigate options to bring Exit 63 into compliance with FHWA policy.

The study area encompasses approximately six miles of I-90 and the areas on either side of I-90. See Study Area Map:
